Long Island is a densely populated, extremely diverse island in southeastern New York State, lying between the New York Harbor and Long Island Sound. Along its beautiful Atlantic shore are Jones Beach State Park, Fire Island, and Montauk Point State Park; the latter featuring Montauk Point Light House and several historic museums. On the eastern end, the North Fork is primarily a community of seaside towns marked by pristine beaches, chic restaurants and antique shops, while the west side features a host of fine restaurants, art galleries and outdoor activities. If you like water sports, check out the East End of Long Island, where the famous Fire Island Beaches and Water Park are located. You can also check out various amusement parks and recreation areas on the island.
Many Long Island families come to the island on summer vacations and stay for a few weeks. Long Island has a lot to offer both tourists and seasonal residents, with plenty of things to do at every stage of the season. The colder months see many things being done indoors, while the warmer weather attracts people outdoors. If you’re a lover of the beach, head to the renowned beaches, such as Jones Beach (famous for its high-quality public swimming) or Fire Island (great for windsurfing, kiteboarding and other water sports). If you love being close to nature, you can explore the many trails that snake their way throughout the forest canopy. Alternatively, if you prefer the comforts of the city, there are so many options for things to do in the Big Apple: visit the many museums, shop at the many big name stores and attend any number of popular concerts and theater events.
Of course, one of the main reasons people go to the island is to swim. Many of the public pools on Long Island offer swimming during both the summer and winter months. However, don’t head to the beaches just before the opening of the season, as they may be crowded and full of overstuffed bodies of water animals, or otherwise unsuitable for swimming. Be sure to book your tank carefully in advance, and get to know the other amenities on site before you leave.
For the family dog, do not miss a visit to one of the Pet Smart facilities that Long Island has to offer. These services utilize top of the line technology to allow small dogs to be walked, bathed and played with in ways that would otherwise be impossible. The facilities also employ highly trained staff members to take care of your family pet while you’re away. What a steal!
